The 1619 W Cary St. redevelopment reimagined a narrow, underutilized lot by subdividing it into two parcels—one fronting W Cary Street and the other fronting Parkwood Avenue. Each parcel hosts a two-family detached dwelling, resulting in four modern homes that respectfully integrate into the existing urban fabric.

Each three-story dwelling reads as a single-family home from the street, preserving the rhythm and scale of adjacent buildings with a reinterpretation of Richmond’s traditional row house vernacular. Interiors prioritize livability and functionality, and include a ground-floor private entrance, 1450 square feet of living space, three bedrooms, two bathrooms, and a private outdoor living space, either a rooftop patio or third-floor balcony. 

While the form responds to building code and zoning requirements, a street-facing entry and corner windows open living spaces to expansive views.  Windows are inset, and the second floor cantilevers over the west side wall.

This Uptown West Cary Street project enhances the corridor’s eclectic character with a 21st Century answer. It exemplifies sensitive, well-scaled infill responding to Richmond’s growing demand for housing while enhancing neighborhood vitality with a diversified option.
